Venture: of Heroes and Monsters, Sneak Preview #3

Venture is a dungeon crawling game, where heroes vanquish foes and gain treasure, until they meet the dungeon boss and confront him.
After playing the game some times, the group of players know how to fight monsters. It’s unlikey that a veteran group of players is defeated by normal monsters in the dungeon. Furthermore, more the heroes go farther in the dungeon, more they became strong by gaining equipment, spells and expendables.
So, in this situation, the only real chance the EK has to defeat the group comes up when they reach the boss.
Obviously, clever and skilled EKs could use their event cards to seriously threaten the heroes even before they discover the boss’ room, and thus weakening them to get more chances in the final fight. But the thing remains: heroes usually defeat all monsters they met, before the boss.
As a result, expecially in the very long quests, the game could became somewhat flat to turn really exciting only when the boss comes up.
There come the minibosses.
Minibosses are lieutenants of evil, stronger than a normal monster but weaker than a boss. In Venture: Of Heroes and Monsters, one or more dungeon rooms could be inhabited by minibosses, monsters with more abilities than a normal monster.
To create minibosses, which are always different and may present very interesting tactical situations, we have created a sort of template the EK must apply to a normal monster to turn it into a miniboss. These templates are cards whick EK draws at the start of the quest and applies to the minibosses indicated into the quest sheet.
For example, let’s say that an Animated Armor is indicated as a miniboss on the quest sheet. The EK drew a miniboss card that say the miniboss is Grawful the Strong which adds one red to the monster’s attack. This is merely an example, of course, there are many interesting minibosses that do different things.
The minibosses also share some special abilities: they all are harder to kill, heroes can’t resurrect while a miniboss is in play and they are have more treasure than a normal monster.
So, by adding minibosses, dungeons should be no more a minor danger and the heroes should watch their backs!
